Types of Skills: Personal, Shared, and Platform

Last updated: March 9, 2026

There are three types of Skills in Fifth Dimension: Personal Skills, Shared Skills, and Platform-provided Skills. All three run the same way with the same capabilities and output quality — the only differences are who created them and whether they can be edited.

Personal Skills

These are Skills created by the user. Full control is available: run, edit, share, and delete. They appear under Your Skillson the Skills page and are private unless explicitly shared.

This is where most firms start. A repeatable process — say, a specific way of screening deals against investment criteria — can be built as a Skill, refined over time, and eventually shared with the team once output quality is confirmed.

Shared Skills

These are Skills that a colleague has shared, either directly or through a group. They appear on the Skills page alongside personal Skills and can be run with any documents. Shared Skills cannot be edited or deleted by the recipient.

Shared Skills are how teams standardise workflows. For example, a team lead might build a lease abstraction Skill tuned to the firm's template and terminology, then share it with the acquisitions team. Everyone runs the same process without needing to configure anything themselves.

💡 Tip: To customise a Shared Skill — adjusting the output format, adding a step, or changing terminology — ask Ellie to create a personal copy. The copy becomes a personal Skill with full control to edit independently. The original Shared Skill stays unchanged for everyone else.

Platform-provided Skills

These are Skills built by the Fifth Dimension team and made available to everyone on the account. They cover common real-estate workflows such as deal screening, document summarisation, and comparable analysis. Like Shared Skills, they can be run but not edited or deleted.

Platform-provided Skills are a good starting point for teams new to the platform, or for anyone who wants to see how a well-structured Skill handles a particular task before building their own. Any Platform-provided Skill can be copied into personal Skills via Ellie and tailored to the firm's specific process.

A Note on What You See on Your Skills Page

All three types appear together on the Skills page. Filtering or sorting by type is on the roadmap.

If two Skills appear with the same name, one is likely a Platform-provided Skill and the other a personal or shared version. Check the ownership label to confirm which is which.
